kmax solution fixed for me too for compiz on a nvidia GeForce FX 5200 (driver nvidia-glx-new). If you only have compiz, you don't even need to use beryl-settings. Just uncheck the /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/detect_refresh_rate key in gconf-editor, or use gconftool -s /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/detect_refresh_rate -t boolean false
