I see the same bug on lucid 10.04.3 LTS Because I install system using FAI system , I just changed the default settings in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf , so mdadm uses metadata version 1.0 after that grub installs correctly and I can boot from the raid1 device
metadata 0.9 also works . but with metadata 1.1 and 1.2 grub legacy fails ....
