I'm an idiot. I'd changed to a Gnome desktop from the Ubuntu/Unity desktop. I must have rm'ed my .gmrc or something, but I assumed it was a major upgrade since it was in the thick of the Oneiric beta. I still love the new Gnome GUI shell, but please disregard my above comments on the basis that I didn't know what the h3#l I was talking about.
