I've been experiencing the exact same behavior on a Thinkpad X301 using Ubuntu 
10.04 Lucid.  (Suspension worked great for multiple years, and sometime a few 
months ago a regression was introduced which now causes it to hang on suspend.)
It may be worth backporting this fix to Lucid (although I haven't yet confirmed 
that it resolved the issue there).
