A few days ago I cleaned up a little bit my /home partition, after quite some time. Since then I got just one freeze, while I was logged into Gnome Shell. No problems in Unity since then. It's not even a week passed, so I can't say for sure, but I guess it could have been for some obsolete user configuration, because now everything works much smoother. I'll see what happens in another week or two.
