I have just downloaded the i386 kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.0.4-oneiric/ and booted into
this. the files were:
linux-headers-3.0.4-030004_3.0.4-030004.201108301138_all.deb
linux-headers-3.0.4-030004-generic_3.0.4-030004.201108301138_i386.deb
linux-image-3.0.4-030004-generic_3.0.4-030004.201108301138_i386.deb

I have noticed it has fixed an old issue that I think was introduced
just after 10.10 which lead to graphics corruption during startup - it
didn't bother me as once it had started all seemed OK. Instead of the
startup screen I used to see mainly blue and white lines and some black
areas of the screen (perhaps this has something to do with it) - the
screen was OK when it refreshed . I'll persist with this for a while to
see if it fixes it.

I did note that this kernel now seems to be my default in GRUB2 - does
this mean that I'll need to manually update my kernel until I remove the
mainline one or update my GRUB2 configuration.
