The system with the relevant hardware in currently used in as a production
machine. I will be able to test the upstream kernel, but I need some time to
prepare another machine to take over the production role during the testing.
Also I need to find some time to do the actual testing since it's a bit busy
now. So it's possible it can take a few weeks before I can post the results of
the test you describe.
I'm glad someone is still looking at this bug though :)

For the people who are looking for a workaround in the meantime:
You can disable nouveau on the first boot after your Ubuntu is installed by
applying the workaround in comment #19. When greeted with the desktop you can
disable nouveau permanent by crafting the following file.

$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-kms.conf
options nouveau modeset=0
