meanwhile, I don't know the difference between "gnome" "gnome shell" "ubuntu classic" "unity" "compiz" "metacity" -- some of them are window managers, some are something else. It's confusing and I haven't seen anything that clearly explains what is what or the official way to choose between them in ubuntu.
