Dear Christopher,

The only reason I downgraded to 9.10 is, the USB devices used to work
when I was last using it, they originally stopped working when I
upgraded to 10.04 and ran some updates.
But I am already upgrading to 10.04 because of other issues. I expect
the problem to remain as it existed before, when I was previously
running 10.04, 10.10 & 11.04...

Jim

some days, it's not even worth chewing through the restraints...

James, it looks like you are using Ubuntu 9.10, which reached EOL on April 30,
2011.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Please upgrade your release and then perform the recommendations in
comment #2 (the apport is automatic but the attachments requested you
have to manually attach to the bug). To upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04, please
execute at the Terminal:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade
