Perhaps my previous note oversimplified matters. I noted this message in
.xsession-errors after failed login:

compiz (unityshell) - Error: GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object not supported

But unity_support_test when run later does show "GL vertex buffer
object" as I noted above. It seems that something causes the necessary
OpenGL extension to get loaded some time after compiz first tries to
start. glxinfo run from a terminal does show the extension, but run from
~/.gnomerc it shows a bunch of extensions in ~/.xsession-errors but
GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object isn't one of them.

What can we do to make the extension get loaded in time, or delay compiz
start until it is loaded?
