While the situation is different, I believe the underlying issue is the same. The problem in all three cases could have been avoided if user consent was asked before grub was installed and the MBR overridden. I don't believe its possible for the installer to detect an encrypted operating system, as the goal of disk encryption is often to be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that there is no operating system/files present. Therefore, the installer should always ask before overwriting the MBR, as the installer cannot be expected to be able to correctly identify all other operating systems on the hard drive, nor the presence of custom bootloading setups on the MBR. I'm just trying to find the root problem and consolidate the bugs accordingly, but if you still disagree and think that this should be separate from bug 882252, feel free to remove the duplicate tags, or ask me and I'll return them to their previous states, with bug 882252 being separate and this being linked to the other disk encryption bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/879025 Title: Ubuntu 11.10 upgrade overwrites MBR To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/879025/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
