Public bug reported:

This has been happening regularly for the past few days, but I still
haven't found a clear pattern. Often I will start typing into the
empathy IRC window and get no visible reaction for several minutes.
Again, often the hang stops when I click on the main conversation
window; at this point the window jumps (as in scrolls) visibly and text
input starts working again, normally reacting to the keystrokes I typed
previously.
