Also, I've tested Linux 3.1, and some newer branches.  They don't fix
the regression.

For simply reverting the small , "guilty" commit ,'git revert
d05c65fff' succeeds on the command line, but does not seem to revert
cleanly.  Those kernels have failed to build.  I haven't had time to
look that over, or to really think about the patch.

So I don't have a simple workaround, for using the later kernels, yet.
Maybe someone will see it more quickly than I.
