alexey-baskinov, "gnome-pannel --replace &" is the official way of reloading 
the panel when it disappears, loses applets etc.
It's not as violent as killing that process, but still is an overkill when all 
is needed is to redraw the panel itself.

Thus, VT switching seems to be the best workaround as for now.
Let's wait for the real bugfix ideas...
