Using the Linaro Tools PPA for Natty ( https://launchpad.net/~linaro- maintainers/+archive/tools/?field.series_filter=natty ) version 0.15.50-2011.10-0ubuntu1~ppa11.04.1 of qemu-user-static, qemu doesn't segfault. I.e. the script works when called directly and via make.
