First work around worked. I also had a problem with changes not being there after a reboot so I used the analyser's ability to generate a script (after using the interface to set 0x19 widget control vref to HIZ) and then made the script run on start up (I saved the script in /etc/init.d/soundSet):
sudo update-rc.d -f soundSet start 99 2 3 4 5 . Sound works every time now.
