The correct comparison is Unity vs KDE, not Gnome 3.2 vs KDE. As I said, Gnome 3.2 is visibly faster (on my system) than either KDE or Compiz. KDE 4.7 appears to scroll and animate smoother than Unity (and KDE 4.6), but not as smoothly as Gnome 3.2.
