Now, i am definitely a unix novice, but i got some sound out through my
HDMI to my TV by doing this:

1. terminal> alsamixer
2. in the mixer: F6 to select sound card:
3. i selected '0', enter to confirm
  - (default)
  0 HDA NVidia
     enter device name
4. Esc to exit

Now when i went to system sound properties, i could hear my chosen alert
sound, and the 'test speakers' also worked for left and right.

All i need to do now is get surround sound like ac3 passing through to
my tv (and on to my amp) and i'll be a happy Ubuntu, and ultimatly XBMC
user.
