A friend was able to get things working by forcing the two drives on the IDE chain into the same order that the kernel was looking for them, in this case the CD-ROM is the master and the CDRW is the slave. So all is well, but his comment was "you shouldn't have to do that!" (and I thought that I had). - so all ends well.
