Same problem here on Ubuntu 11.10 as outlined.

The following workarounds did NOT work for me:

* padsp kino
* pasuspender -- kino
* entering "default" as audio device
* entering any other existing audio device which is in /dev/snd/

I had the same problem in Ubuntu 10.10 on a completely different
computer. Apparently this bug exists since 2008. I'm asking myself why
this program is even in Ubuntu?
