I have the same problem on skype on kubuntu 11.10.

If I try to start a test call, it appears like there's no capture flow
created by skype... that is with the mic "off" as a capture device (all
of this on KDE's mixer). If I turn it "on" as a capture device, then
skype hangs up when I try to make the test call... I have to kill it.
Then I tried separating the input volumes of both mic channels... then
the call went through, the left channel volume was turned down little by
little (automagically) but still no sound (and again, no capture flow).

I hope that helps a little.
