I have this problem on a thinkpad x31 with the following audio
chipset...

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM
(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

A full reboot is required to make sound work and sometimes that doesn't
even help. I am experiencing a similar issue to the above poster; when I
press the hardware volume buttons on my thinkpad, very short bursts of
sounds pop through.

I have tried the modified kernel above but it doesn't fix the issue.

It's a bit of a showstopper at the moment so I'm using a vanilla
compiled kernel but I'd really like to see this solved. Is there any
output I can include?
