I think I have gotten to the root of the problem. It has to do with the language locale. It was set to English-Nigeria (en-ng). I noticed that some python apps have issues with that particular language locale, sometimes to the extent of not even running at all. I changed the locale to en-gb and I can now view comments. That doesn't mean that this bug is invalid though but at the very least, it reduces its severity
