I have been plagued by this too: the kernel's r8169 driver would panic with machine-check-exceptions after about 300KB of transfer, while the Realtek r8168 driver would similarly panic after ~4GB. I'm having good luck so far after adding "nolapic" to my kernel command line, to disable the local APIC. This has no negative side-effects on an MSI MS-1057 notebook (945G/ICH7-M chipset).
