I have upgraded my system from Kubuntu Edgy to Feisty and I have the
same problem. Network Manager choose to activate the usb1 host-to-host
interface instead of the eth0 ethernet interface. To activate the
network, I have to manually change the active network interface trough
knetworkmanager. Only eth0 is in /etc/network/interface & I don't
understand why network-manager choose the usb1 interface or how I can
configure it to choose eth0 instead (I expect that interfaces not listed
in /etc/network/interface must not be activated at boot-time) :

I'm running network-manager 0.6.4-6ubuntu7 & the problem is still there.
