I'm afraid I'll need a little more information ... these devices are for
"userspace drivers", and it may be entirely correct for them to be owned
by root if there is no known driver for the device.

Please supply a copy of "lsusb" with the drive, camera, etc. plugged in.

You may find that your drive is accessible as /dev/sda1 and that your
camera is /dev/sdb1 (a lot of cameras appear as mass storage devices and
do not require a special device).
