No worries. Just happy to help make ubuntu better.
I clicked the small circle in the top right corner. Clicked system settings, 
then system info, shifted to default applications, made my changes and closed 
the window. My new settings are still the same when i reopen the window and 
same after reboot. But the changes havent had any effect.

My music is usually mp3's or m4a's
Movies are usually avi's.

I guess these should already be fairly known mimetypes for movies and
music.

Finding the default application changer should almost be filed as a bug
as well. It is pretty hard to find with out the help of google.
