In my frustration I purchased a USB Card Reader and that permits me to read the SD cards (and others) via a USB port, so the problem must be not seeing or identifying the hardware but I'm not sure how to confirm this. I have tried looking at some settings in the terminal but am not sure where to look let alone what to change. This might help those who do know where to look. John
