I have the same problem in my Acer Aspire One Happy (Intel Atom 550, card reader ENE technology) running Ubuntu 11.10. It can be fixed by including "acpiphp" module in /etc/modules. After rebooting, then reading memory card, just simply plug it in in the card reader, and will pop up automatically. I have documented the detail here: http://waluyo-adi-siswanto.blogspot.com/2011/12/card-reader-acer-aspire-one-in-ubuntu.html
