Actually, this seems to be a more general issue, maybe related to control/unicode characters. Here's another way to reproduce: 1) open a file consisting entirely of IRC colour codes and blocks such as: x04█x04█x10▒x10▒x10▒x10▒x10... (where x = ASCII character 3) 2) replace all instances of "10" with "03" 3) mousepad replaces all instances of "10" with "1003".
