I did some testing today and I no longer need the 'noapic' flag in the boot
options, only the 'nomodeset' flag.
This is annoying because that flag forces the graphics to be 1024x768, which
makes it very hard to use.
(I've updated the bug at the top).

Anyone have any ideas? What can I do to get this fixed?

** Description changed:

  I've just upgraded my install of 11.10 x64 to 12.04 x64. Under 11.10 I
needed the 'noapic' flag in the boot options, and everything worked
fine. After the upgrade, my laptop refused to boot (stuck on blank
screen) until I added the 'nomodeset' flag to the boot options along
with the existing 'noapic'. The laptop now boots up, but the graphics
are stuck at 1024x768, with no way of changing them.
+
+ I just tested with a live cd, and it now only needs the 'nomodeset' flag to
be set to get it to work.
+ (Although this flag comes with the dodgy screen resolution, so it's not very
usable...)

  This problem didn't exist in 11.10, so I'd say it's a regression?

My laptop is a new-ish (couple of months old) Lenovo Thinkpad L520,
  Intel Quad Core i7 Processor, 6 GB DDR3 SDRAM, 15.6″ HD+ (1600×900), and
Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor graphics.

What can I do to help debug this issue?
I.e. outputs of files, and scripts to run, etc...
