Some more information here

Switched ACPI Suspend Type from [S3(STR)] to [S1(POS)]*, still fail.
Tried in XFCE - still fail. This time though I noticed that for some odd reason
it kicked in screensaver before total suspend - why would it do that?

Hibernate fails exactly the same way.

S3 - Set suspend type to Suspend to RAM under ACPI OS
S1 - Set suspend type to Power On Suspend under ACPI OS

Suspend and hibernate used to work on this machine if I remember correctly,
maybe I should try disconnecting all "extra" USB devices.

** Summary changed:

- suspend failure via gnome-shell "Suspend"
+ suspend and hibernate failure with M61SME-S2
