I also noticed the slow reads when trying to create a multi-boot USB stick. For a 38MB initrd it takes over 1 minute to load on all pcs tested. Using syslinux, the same initrd (from the same stick) is loaded in less then about 5seconds. So this is definitely not a Bios issue.
