FYI,

Many devices (I mean *phones* specifically here) are provider-locked to
not allow using some bluetooth profiles, despite the fact that they may
support them. If you're running into this bug, please make sure you also
test, for instance, sending files between two Ubuntu systems. A
"permission denied" error there may be mean you're actually hitting this
"bug", but just testing between Ubuntu and a phone doesn't mean the
phone actually allows using obex push, pull, or ftp.

FWIW, Android phones may have had bluetooth crippled by providers too.
However, if you are using custom ROMS, then this should not be the case
and bluetooth probably has all its profiles working.
