The initctl command apparently needs some additional parameter:

jani@amilo:~$ initctl status
initctl: missing job name
Try `initctl --help' for more information.
jani@amilo:~$ sudo initctl status
initctl: missing job name
Try `initctl --help' for more information.

I'll attach the list of jobs it currently knows about.
