Ok, for the first step, can you boot with nomodeset and see if it gets
farther into the boot process? Does the machine completely power off
(LED's go off) or is it just the screen? Is caps lock flashing? If it's
just the screen, can you still log in remotely via ssh? We are going to
need some logs here to look into it further. If it's intermittent, the
/var/log/kern.log should have historical information on the failed boots
if you could boot it a bunch of times to get it in a working state. Has
the oneiric-updates kernel been tested already to be sure it was not
fixed?
