I am facing the same problem now at our computer-labs at university. Mounted NFS homedirs and LDAP authentication. A co-worker tried a different approach using SLIM as login manager. This let's LDAP users login and use unity properly. Unfortunately, it screws up local accounts. Additionally, the shutdown/reboot widget does not work anymore. Users can only logout with these, but not stop/reboot the machine. One more thing: if the screen becomes locked, users cannot unlock it via LDAP.
