I have also noticed that the image from my webcam comes out flipped
horizontally.

I found a partial workaround for my model. Installing v4l2ucp gives a
configuration tool for brightness and other stuff.  Increasing the
brightness parameter to maximum makes that the video output does not
freeze. It just still has a small initial delay to react to movement.

There is also a parameter to flip the video output horizontally, so this
also makes the image come up correctly. But using it with skype (with an
environment variable set up to  /usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so,
otherwise the webcam does not work) if I change this parameter skype
crashes when enabling video.
