I had a similar issue. I tried for three times without luck but the fourth time, it worked. I suppose the problem is caused if you choose your root partition to be btrfs format. The forth time, I choose '/' (root) partition as ext4, and /home to be btrfs and the installer didn't crash. The install was sucessful and I'm typing this in Kubuntu.
