I tried the indicated kernel (v3.2-precise) and was unable to boot into
the Gnome Environment. In recovery mode I had access to the root console
and tried to plug in the usb stick.
I received a lot of lines directly into the console similar to these:

I also tried using a different usb stick that works properly and I
noticed that the following line

was different
