Tom, I'm not familiar with XTest, but is it possible to have a 251ms delay between keydown and keyup? I think it might be a workaround for this problem. See, e.g. this remark and remark #4 in the same bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/747812/comments/2
