I'm not sure whether this is properly attributed to nautilus or gtk, but
the generic file selection dialog I get when I try to open, upload,
attach, etc. a file is huge. It's wider than my monitor:

Even without a dual monitor it's that big. I tried resetting my compiz
settings to their defaults, but that didn't help.

At least one user on Ask Ubuntu claims to have the same problem:
