I also had a split screen in my Dell Inspiron 8000 when installed Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric. After a lot of net reading and experimentation, I found the following simple solution. I created a new xorg.conf file in the directory /etc/X11. The file contains only the following lines
Section "Device" Identifier "Card0" Driver "vesa" EndSection As some other posts indicated, you have to change the graphic card driver.
