Hi guys, I am getting this problem in Maverick as well but find the
workaround of making /sda to /hda and all that goes with it beyond my
capabilities. Has a fix been found yet please?

miles@P4:~$ sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Thanks
Miles
