Thanks.  I booted that one, and the first time, it just froze on the GUI
login screen - mouse wouldn't move.  So I booted it again, and this time
it gave the now-classic panic at 53 seconds.  This was 3.1.0-030100
-generic-pae #201202081420 (reading the version number off the backtrace
on the text console after the panic, as usual).

I'm also starting to throw together a little script to automate the
download of the right kernels .debs from your site, and do the dpkg
install and reboot if possible to the specified kernel automatically.
If there's already a spiffy command to do that, let me know :)
