Try doing the following:
In terminal,
sudo  gedit /etc/modprobe.d/sound
paste this line
options snd-hda-intel model=uniwill-m31 position_fix=1
 save and exit

if you are are using feisty or compiled a newer version of alsa the
dep_range problem is gone and you wont need position_fix=1

You may also try model=toshiba or model=6stack-digout and see if those work for 
you.
On my laptop, toshiba l30 115,  model=toshiba enabled sound from headphones 
only, model=uniwill-m31 enabled sound only from speakers and 
model=6stack-digout did not work on my model.
