Some feedback folks. After running this mornings updates and also muting all sound and closing Empathy, gnome-shell seems stable. Now which of these three things has helped I don't know. Will run as is till lunch and then try enabling sound and Empathy and see how it goes. I took a wild shot in the dark with Empathy after reading Julien and Tobias' posts.
