Interesting. I did "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda", waited a few minutes.
The install after that went successfully.

I did this because, when I tried grub-install through chroot method from
live usb, it told me there were UFS2 file systems on the disk - which
didn't make sense, since I'd chosen for ubuntu to delete EVERYTHING and
install ubuntu.

None the less, it works now.
