Solution of Renzo Filinie did not work for me: This solves the icon problem for me on Xubuntu 11.10:
Download icons from: http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/Elementary+Tray+Icons+4+Pidgin?content=126339 Make new folder called 22 in folder: /usr/share/icons/elementaryXubuntu-dark/status/22 (ps. elementaryXubuntu-dark can be replaced by the another elementary theme for icons) Paste into this 22 folder the icons you have unzipped from the downloaded file.
