This still happens to me sometimes in Ubuntu 11.04 on a Dell Vostro V13. I have my laptop lid close event set to Suspend, and when I manually choose to Hibernate and quickly shut the lid, sometimes it only goes into Suspend. I only find this out later, usually after the battery has died.
